Tier Two reading class will focus on teaching students a variety of reading strategies that will help to improve their reading comprehension.

Week of May 22nd
Students will be presenting their end of semester projects to the class this week.
Field day Friday!
Week of May 15th
This week we will be completing our animal presentations and presenting them to classmates. We will also have the opportunity to go to the high school to visit their World Fair.
Week of May 8th
Students will now be researching an animal of their choice. They will create a slide show presentation on an animal of their choice. This will include background on their animal, why their animal needs help from humans, and how we can help them. When completed they will present to their classmates.
Week of May 1st
We will be completing our novel this week. We will then move on to reading National Geographic articles and completing work related to recognizing cycles and stages.
Week of April 24th
We will continue our novel study.
Week of April 17th
This week students will be working on outlining and beginning to write their own "novel".
Week of April 10th
Students continue to read their novel study while engaging in class discussion and answering high level questions related to their novel.
Week of April 3rd
We will continue our novel study while filling out graphic organizers looking at cause and effect relationships within the text.
Week of March 27th
This week we will begin reading the novel The One and Only Ivan. As we read we will summarize, answer high level questions, and engage in related discussion.
Week of March 13th
This week we will continue reading national Geographic Extreme Explorer magazine. We will be reading an article on manatees. The class will then use explicit statements from the text, and background information, to make inferences about information they gather. They will also state their opinion, with support, on whether people should interact with manatees. Next they will read an article on gravity, summarizing each subsection of the article.
Week of March 6th
We will be sharing our Pest Control Posters in front of the class this week. We will then move on to non-fiction reading with National Geographic. Students will read an article on a 14 year old girl who is trying to reach the North Pole. While reading they will write down the main idea of each section of the article. They will then use the information they gather to write a summary of the article.
Week of February 27th
We will be continuing the writing process for our Pest Control posters with editing and revising individually, and then with a partner. Once this is completed students will type up final copies and put their posters together.
Week of February 20th
This week students will complete the illustration and rough draft for their Pest Control posters.
Week of February 13th
This week students are reading an article on dust storms. They will be choosing explicit statement from the text. They will then use these statements, paired with their background knowledge, to make inferences.
We will then be moving onto a descriptive writing assignment. Students will get to create their own pest, and will be creating a pest control poster. We will focus on using high level verbs and adjectives in our descriptions.
Week of February 6th
This week we continue our non-fiction reading with an article on nomadic tribes from around the world. We will take notes on each tribe, and then compare/contrast them.
Week of January 30th
Students will present their slide shows to the class this week. We will them be discussing grit and making posters to explain what it means to have grit. For the remainder of the week we will be doing some non-fiction reading with National Geographic magazines. The class will read about several predatory animals and how they hunt. They will then use a graphic organizer to break down the animals' hunting techniques and summarize how they hunt.
Week of January 23rd
This week students will complete their research on an athlete of their choice. They will then take the information they gather and organize it into an informational paper, or slide show. Their final project will then be shared with the class.
Week of January 16th
This week we will complete our problem/solution t-charts for the movie Race, and discuss. Students will then have the opportunity to complete a chart on an athlete of their choice. They will use the information they collect to complete a slideshow presentation or paper on their athlete.
Week of January 9th
This week we are looking at problem-solution relationships. Students are learning about several different Olympic athletes. The focus is on the challenges they faced in their lives, and how they overcame them. Students are completing T-charts to organize the information they collect.

January 5th
Welcome back! We will be getting to know one another and class expectations for Tier Two Reading class.
Week December 12th
Students have completed their novel study and are working on final projects of their choice. Once completed they will be sharing their projects with the class. We will then finish the semester with a National Geographic magazine. With the magazines they will work on comparing and contrasting, summarizing, and making inferences.
Week of December 5th
Students continue to engage in excellent class discussion as we read The One and Only Ivan.
Week of November 28th
We continue to read The One and Only Ivan. As we read we are answering comprehension questions and having class discussions.
Week of November 14th
Students continue their novel study on The One and Only Ivan.
Week of November 11th
Students will complete their endangered animal presentations. We will then begin a novel study on The One and Only Ivan. As we read students will be analyzing important quotes from the book.
Week of October 31st
This week students are completing a slideshow on an endangered animal of their choice. This slideshow will include an introduction to the animal, an explanation of why the animal is endangered, what is being done to prevent extinction, and why we should help save the animal. Students will be presenting their slideshow to the class.
Week of October 24th
This week students will be researching reasons people need to save frogs. They will need to support their reasons with evidence, and then summarize their findings. Once they have completed this they will have the opportunity to research an endangered animal of their choice.
Week of October 17th
This week we will continue to work on our National Geographic magazines. We will be collecting evidence to create a summary, as well as filling out an organizer related to the dangers amphibians face.
Week of October 10th
This week we will be reading National Geographic articles. Students will be working on vocabulary, main idea, problem/solution, and note taking as they complete their reading.
Week of October 3rd
We will complete the written portion of our our multi-paragraph Pest Control Posters this week. We will then edit and revise our work, and type a final copy.
Week of September 26th
This week we will begin our descriptive writing unit. We will be working on using specific descriptive words to appeal to the senses. Students will be making a pest control poster with a detailed description of a pest they have created.
Week of September 20th
This week we are working on inferences and explicit sentences, as well as making comparisons. We will be reading National Geographic articles and filling out plan pages to practice each of these skills.
Week of September 12th
We will be discussing the problems and solutions students found in the movie Race, as well as the end of movie questions. Students will create their own definition of grit, and share examples of people they know with grit, to complete our Olympic unit. We will then be working on non-fiction science reading skills through the use of National Geographic magazines.
Week of September 6th
Students are watching the movie Race and completing problem/solution charts in relation to Jesse Owens life. They will also be answering end of movie questions.
Week of August 29th
Students completed and shared their group reports on Olympic athletes with the class. They are now conducting research on an athlete of their choice, and will write a paragraph on that athlete and the challenges they have overcome.
Week of August 22nd
This week students are completing T-charts on problems Olympic athletes have faced in their lives and how they solved these problems. First, they will work in a small group to complete a T-chart on Babe Didrikson, Wilman Rudolph, Muhammad Ali, or Jesse Owens. They will then use their T-chart to write a paragraph about their assigned athlete, which they will present to the class. After group projects have been completed students will get to choose an athlete they are interested in to complete a similar project individually.
Week of August 15th
This week students will discuss classroom expectations and get to know one another. We will then move into a unit on grit. Students will learn the definition of grit and explain what it means to them. We will look at grit in relation to the Olympics and the athletes that take part in the games. Problem and solution
T-charts will be completed as a class in regards to how athletes overcome obstacles.
